Sports Psychiatry
Sports psychiatry focuses on the unique mental health needs of athletes, including performance anxiety, attention and focus difficulties, burnout, disordered eating, sleep problems, and the emotional weight of injury and recovery.
Athletes face a distinct kind of pressure. The same drive that fuels competition can also feed anxiety, perfectionism, and identity struggles when performance dips or injury forces time away.
Dr. Amar Chakra, MD, a double board-certified psychiatrist, works with athletes as part of his broader psychiatric practice. He combines comprehensive psychiatric evaluation with attention to the whole athlete: sleep, nutrition, training load, recovery, and the mental patterns that shape performance. Treatment may include therapy referrals, medication management when appropriate, and integrative strategies that support both mental health and athletic goals.
Dr. Chakra works with athletes age 6 and up, from youth competitors to adults, serving families throughout Alpharetta, Roswell, Milton, and Johns Creek.
